The company Empresa Nacional Elcano Merchant Marine SA was founded in 1942 by the Spanish state holding company Instituto Nacional de Industria and is named after the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano . Its headquarters are in Madrid with subsidiaries in Spain, Portugal , Brazil , Argentina and other countries.
history
Originally founded with the dual aim of being a state-owned company for shipyards and shipping companies , the shipyard operations were outsourced in 1964 and the company devoted itself exclusively to maritime activities as a shipping company. In 1997 it was privatized and renamed Empresa Naviera Elcano, SA (short: ENE). Today the company is mainly active in the international sea transport of raw materials, energy sources and chemical products.
Elcano operates cargo ships such as bulk carriers as well as various tankers such as oil, gas and product tankers .
