Product and chemical tankers

A product tanker is a tanker that only transports semi-finished and finished products made from petroleum . Chemical tankers , also known as parcel tankers , transport petrochemical products as well as cooking oils, acids , alkalis and other chemicals.

Both differ from the crude oil tanker, apart from their significantly smaller size, through a narrower tank division, the possibility of transporting and handling different products at the same time, and through (e.g. plastic) coated or stainless steel tank walls that are intended to prevent corrosion from aggressive media such as gasoline . The narrower subdivision of the tank increases construction costs and slightly reduces the payload, but enables a more flexible response to fluctuating demand for transport capacities.
