FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1985/86 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
Autumn champions Werder Bremen had topped the table for most of the season and were two points ahead of defending champions FC Bayern Munich before the penultimate matchday . On this penultimate matchday there was a direct duel in the Bremen Weserstadion, in which the Bremen team were able to become German champions prematurely by winning. The game ended 0-0. In the 89th minute, Michael Kutzop had awarded a penalty for Werder Bremen. On the last day of the match, Bremen lost 2-1 at VfB Stuttgart , while Bayern won 6-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach and were again German champions with a tie due to the better goal difference - for the first and so far only time a club won the championship had never led the league on any of the 33 match days.
Since Bayern also won the DFB Cup , VfB Stuttgart qualified as vice cup winner for the European Cup Winners' Cup . In addition to SV Werder Bremen in second place, Bayer 05 Uerdingen , Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer 04 Leverkusen also qualified for the UEFA Cup .
Borussia Dortmund had won the relegation . Dortmund lost their first game against SC Fortuna Köln , the third in the 2nd Bundesliga, with 0-2. The second leg ended 3-1 for Dortmund, which meant a play-off was necessary, which Dortmund won 8-0. In the second leg, Jürgen Wegmann scored the 3-1 for BVB 20 seconds before the final whistle.
