Emscher zone

The Emscherzone is a region in North Rhine-Westphalia along the Emscher River , in the eastern and northern Ruhr area . The majority of the natural space in the Emscher zone is known as the Emscherland . In the west, from Oberhausen, the Emscher zone extends into the Lower Rhine lowlands .

The Emscher region is a changing industrial landscape. Some of the old mining industries are withdrawing, leaving behind large areas for future new uses or changes. The economic area is being transformed by landscape repairs, industrial buildings are being restored, mining settlements are being modernized and more green spaces are being created. The Emscher Landscape Park represents an overall concept .

In many areas of the Emscher zone, logistics , service and modern production or trading companies have already successfully relocated. A prominent example is the conversion of large areas of the former HOAG ( Hüttenwerke Oberhausen AG ) for the CentrO shopping center .

Historically, the Emscher zone was characterized by the onset of industrialization around 1850, immediately after the construction of the Cologne-Minden railway . At that time mining technology was so advanced that the mighty overburden over the coal-bearing layers in the northern Ruhr area could be penetrated by steep shafts.
