The municipality of Herøy belonging island round (old spellings Rundøy or RUNDO ) is located on the western Norwegian coast in Fylke Møre og Romsdal , southwest of Alesund . The approximately 100 inhabitants of the island are spread over the villages of Runde and Goksøyr .

Breeding birds on lap

The island is known as Scandinavia's southernmost breeding colony for sea ​​birds . Each year around 170,000 seabird pairs breed in the steep cliffs.

Also common gulls , black-topped gulls , herring gulls , oystercatchers as well as eider ducks and shelduck can be found breeding birds in abundance.

According to a survey by Norsk Ornitologisk Forening from 1990, 221 bird species were observed on round . Of these, 77 are known to breed on the island.

The round treasure

Runde also became known as Treasure Island, because in 1972 considerable amounts of gold and silver coins were recovered from the Dutch East India sailor Akerendam , which crashed and sank on the island's cliffs in a storm in 1725. Since April 2011, part of the treasure has been exhibited in Runde Miljøsenter.

Economy and tourism

In addition to agriculture and fishing, tourism is increasingly the livelihood of the residents of Rundes. Numerous nature-interested tourists from all over the world visit the bird island to explore the unique and easily accessible bird colonies. In addition to a campsite in Goksøyr, numerous private rooms and holiday apartments offer accommodation to visitors. From the harbor in Runde, boat trips to the bird cliffs are offered in summer. There is a guest dock for boat tourists in the harbor.

On October 1st, 2009, a maritime research station, the Runde Miljøsenter , was officially opened.

Transport links

The island is connected to the neighboring island of Remøya by a bridge ( Rundebrua ) and is therefore very easily accessible. Through the Eiksund tunnel , currently the deepest submarine tunnel in the world, Runde can be reached practically without a domestic ferry.

The nearest port of the Hurtigruten is in Torvik, approx. 15 km away .

The nearest airports are in Ålesund ( Vigra ) and Ørsta / Volda (Hovden).
