The Runde fyr beacon is located on the island of Runde in western Norway . It has been in operation since 1767, making it the fourth oldest beacon in Norway .
From 1767 to 1825 the beacon consisted only of a coal or peat fire that burned in an iron pot. As it was difficult to keep the fire burning during rain and storms, a stone tower with a beacon was built on the Kvalnes ridge in 1825. In 1858, a 27 m high iron tower was also built on Kvalnes. The beacon was created by an oil lamp with a magnifying glass.
An electrically operated beacon was erected a little higher on the mountain slope in 1935. Until it was automated in 2002, the Runde fyr was supervised by a beacon keeper who lived in the farm buildings located a little below the beacon. The old iron tower on Kvalnes was removed down to the lower iron ring. This can still be seen today.
The Runde fyr has a range of 18.9 nautical miles .
A little below the lighthouse is a small, well-preserved bunker from the Second World War . The bunker was used by the German occupiers as an observation post.
The lighthouse and the associated farm buildings are under monument protection.
