Encke is an impact crater on the western front of the moon in the plane of Oceanus Procellarum , southeast of the Kepler crater and northwest of Kunwosky . The crater rim is irregular and little eroded, the inside of the crater is flat and has a system of fracture grooves .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Johann Franz Encke .
