Endeavor is the name of two sailing yachts with which the British aircraft designer and regatta sailor Sir Thomas Sopwith tried to win the America's Cup as a challenger in 1934 and 1937 . The Endeavor and Endeavor II belonged to the J class . Both boats were beaten by the US defenders, 3-2 by Rainbow in 1934 and 4-0 by Ranger in 1937 .

In 1934, the victory of the Americans was very close and extremely controversial, as the rule was interpreted unilaterally in favor of the defense yacht Rainbow , at that time people spoke of rule infraction. No challenger had come this close to winning the bottomless pot up to this point . The newspapers headlined: "Britannia rules the waves and America waives the rules." (Great Britain rules the seas and America renounces the rules.) This event prompted the American America's Cup defender Harold S. Vanderbilt to formulate the first racing rules in 1934, the basic structure of which is still valid today.

The Endeavor has a very eventful history. It was shut down in 1938 after serving as a training boat for the Endeavor II during the 1937 America's Cup. She subsequently changed hands several times without ever sailing again. Between 1984 and 1988 she was restored under the direction of the then US-American owner Elizabeth Meyer , after only parts of the hull were preserved. A major overhaul took place in 2001. The current owner is the American L. Dennis Kozlowski .

The Endeavor II was also shut down after returning from the competition in the USA and sold for scrapping after the Second World War . In 1968 it was finally destroyed.

Under the name Hanuman , the Endeavor II was recreated at the Royal Huisman shipyard and completed in April 2009.
