Enderby is a municipality in the south of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The parish is located in the Interior Plateau , in the Regional District of North Okanagan .

geography

Enderby is on the west bank of the Shuswap River . The village is about 15 miles south of Salomon Arm and 36 kilometers north of Vernon on Highway 97A .

history

The history of the settlement goes back further than the general view of Europeans, as the area was already a settlement and hunting area of ​​the First Nation before the settlement of Europeans . Mainly members of the Secwepemc tribe , also known as Shuswap , settled here .

The settlement developed over time from a settlement of settlers. Alexander Leslie Fortune is considered the first white settler to settle here in 1866. The settlement was originally run as Lambly's Landing, after the surname of two brothers who built a department store here in 1878 and later a cattle ranch. In the course of time, so many people lived in the settlement that a post office was opened here on November 1, 1887, under the name Enderby.

Demographics

The last official census , the 2016 Census , showed a population of 2,964 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census for the municipality still showed a population of 2,932 inhabitants. Compared to the last census in 2011, the population only increased by a weak 1.1% and developed against the provincial average, there with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the population in the municipality only increased by 3.7%, while the provincial average increased by 7.0%.

At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 47.7 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 53.3 years. The median age of all residents in the province in 2016 was 43.0 years. For the 2011 census, a median age of 50.0 years was determined for the residents of the municipality and 41.9 years for the residents of the province.

politics

A confirmation of the local self-government for the community took place on March 1, 1905 ( incorporated as City ).

The community mayor is Greg McCune. Together with six other citizens, it forms the council of the small town (council).

economy

Most jobs can be found in agriculture and forestry. Other important areas of employment can be found in the field of light industry and in connection with tourism.

The median income of an employee from Enderby was C $ 18,656 in 2006, well below the average income for the entire province of British Columbia of C $ 24,867.

traffic

Enderby is on Highway 97A, which crosses the community in a north-south direction and connects Vernon in the south with Sicamous in the north. The community does not have an airport, but has a connection to the Canadian Pacific Railway .

Enderby benefits to a small extent from its location on Highway 97 A, which is a tourist link from Vancouver to the national parks in the Rockie Mountains. A tourist attraction in its own right is the nearby Enderby Cliffs Provincial Park .
