As a set of rules, in addition to the Open Game License of the d20 system , it also offers the in-house arcana system, in which tarot- like cards are used instead of the usual dice in role-playing games , which are used more for inspiration than for actual decision-making about success or failure.

background

A game of angels at the Burg-Con in Berlin 2009

The background world is very unusual: In a future version of the earth in the year 2654, after various apparently supernatural catastrophes and global warming with coastal flooding in Europe, the Angelite Church , which has placed angels at the center of its religion. She does not promise believers a post-mortem existence, but protection from this world through angels. According to the Angelite Church, these angels "descended" from the hereafter to beings of flesh and blood and live very real and visible to everyone on earth in the form of childlike, androgynous beings with large white wings. They live with the respective lines of their orders in extremely high castles, the heavens , and serve as messengers of God in the service of the Angelite Church and as fighters for the faith against heresy and the enemy of humanity, the dream seeds sent by the Lord of the Flies , the only can be defeated by angels.

The Angelite Church has no celibacy . It promotes reproduction and values children very highly, since the entire society of people loyal to the Church is dependent on a high birth rate. Child abuse is considered a capital offense in line with murder and heresy. According to the storyline , the Angelite Church has developed out of some Catholic ideas over the centuries, but now in the year 2654 has different values on many points.

In the basic version of angels, five players play a group of angels (together with a game master who represents the game world), in which each of the five warring angel orders is typically represented. The group is entrusted with various tasks by the Angelite Church and the angels slowly discover the complex interrelationships of the Engel game world. This is also the real attraction of the game, since there are a lot of secrets about the genesis, training and further development of the angels endowed with extraordinary powers and the intentions of the Angelite Church.

Since the publication "Mater Ecclesia" it is also possible to play Templars from the various orders.

characters

The angels of the Lord

The angels are divided into orders, and each order has a distinctive appearance and a specific task.

The aspects of the angel orders differ in part from those of the classically known archangels. For example, Gabriel is known as the “messenger of God”, while in the game he appears as the archangel of the order of the “Lord's fighters”. Conversely, Uriel, in the game of the archangel of the order “The Keeper of the Ways”, is classically regarded as the guide of the dead to the Last Judgment.

  • Michaelites : "They are like God" - They are the leaders and tacticians as well as the mouthpiece of a host of angels.
  • Gabrielites : "The Lord's fighters", "The angels of death" - only these warrior angels wear black clothes. Every Gabriel has a flaming sword that is a part of their soul.
  • Urielites : "The keepers of the ways" - The ranged fighters and scouts of the crowd.
  • Raphaelites : "The healing hands of the Lord" - The healers and pastors of the multitude.
  • Ramielites : “The Keepers of Knowledge” - You have the privilege to read and write and have strong meditative skills.
  • Sarielites : “The praising angels” - wingless angels who sing into battle on titanic floating platforms to edify their siblings and have recently been trained for espionage activities.
  • Raguelites: "The keepers of the past" - an extinct order that dealt with forbidden technology.
  • Samaelites : “The keepers of values” - A lost order, which at that time apparently also represented an inquisition within the Angelite Church.

The angels stand above all people except the Pontifex Maximus Petrus Secundus Maximus, the founder of the Angelitic Church, who has lived for 500 years as a boy in St. Peter's Basilica in Roma Aeterna, and the abbots who direct their respective orders from heaven, and are worshiped by them. Each “group” consists of a Michaelite, a Gabrielite, an Urielite, a Raphaelite and a Ramielite. The heaven of the Raguelites was destroyed by one of the purgatory fires that make their orbits on earth. The Samaelite sky was completely enclosed in Corsica and is therefore isolated from the rest of Europe.

Monaks and Beguines

They are the servants of the church and each belong to one of the angel orders. They either live in the heaven of their order or in monasteries . They serve the ideals of the Angelite Church and its special order.

Templar

Fighters on behalf of the Angelite Church, each subordinate to one of the angel orders. They form the army of the Angelite Church. Depending on the order, more or less emphasis is placed on the maintenance of a Templar army and different parts of the army. When it comes to clothing and hairstyle, the Templars usually emulate the strongly revered angels of their order.

Prey rider

Black-clad riders and mercenaries who travel through Europe on behalf of the Angelite Church and collect the church tithe on their travels, which is collected from angels in the form of children who serve the Angelite Church as Templars, Monachs / Beguines or in another form be asked.

Dream seed

Insect-like beings that represent the enemies of mankind. They got their name from the common saying that they came from the dreams of the Lord of the Flies . Their size can vary from fly-sized creatures to gigantic leviathans that devour entire ships. They evidently arise in the fire country, which leaves huge pillars of fire, called purgatory , wherever they go. Dream seeds are mostly similar to insects, but they can also have other strange shapes. It is unclear whether they are pursuing strategic goals, but their behavior often suggests that there is a malicious intelligence behind them.

Diadochi

Independent city princes who have renounced the Angelite Church. They use the remains of technical equipment from the 20th - 21st centuries that are forbidden by the church. Century z. B. Firearms.

Heretic

Heretics come in a great variety. Some dispute various doctrines of the Angelite Church. On the other hand, there are also cults of the Lord of the Flies that practice selfishness, cruelty and ritual child murder.
