Engelbert Baumeister (art historian)

Engelbert Baumeister (born March 18, 1880 in Berlin , † April 15, 1965 in Munich ) was a German art historian .

Engelbert Baumeister, son of the ophthalmologist Eduard Baumeister, passed his Abitur in 1899 at the grammar school in Bromberg . From 1899 to 1901 he studied in Freiburg, Munich and Berlin and then interrupted his studies to spend several years in the country and to do military service. In June 1906 he received his doctorate from Berthold Riehl in Munich.

On February 3, 1908, he began his work in the graphic collection in Munich, initially as an unpaid scientific assistant, from 1920 as an assistant, later as a curator, from 1937 as chief curator. As a former NSDAP member, he was briefly released in 1945, but was able to resume his work after denazification . He retired on April 30, 1948

He was mainly concerned with graphics, single-sheet prints and drawings by old German masters, but also, for example, by the Asam brothers .
