Engelspietà

Pietà by Carlo Crivelli , around 1470

An angel spietà is a devotional image that depicts the body of Jesus Christ , half-length or full-length with the crucifixion wounds and the side wound , but not attached to the cross , but held, worshiped or lamented by one or more mourning angels . The name Engelspietà is derived from this, while in the ordinary Pietà the Mother of God holds the body.

The Engelspietà motif was particularly widespread in France and Italy in the 13th century. French pictures only prefer an angel by the side; in Italy several angels surround the Christ depicted in the center.

The motif of the Man of Sorrows weeping by angels comes from the German-speaking area of the 14th century. He is often represented with a goblet in which his blood collects.
