The Halimeda ghost pipefish ( Solenostomus halimeda ) is known from numerous localities in the Indian Ocean and in the western Pacific from the Maldives to the Marshall Islands . It lives in shallow water to a depth of 15, maximum up to 23 meters. With a maximum length of about 6.5 centimeters, it is the smallest representative of the ghost pipefish . Its large head, which is about the length of the rest of the body (without the tail), is striking. The caudal fin is small and has the shape and size of the first dorsal fin and the pelvic fins . Halimeda ghost pipefish can often be found among green algae of the genus Halimeda or between corals and other algae. Their color is adapted to their surroundings, but can also be bright red or green.
As with all ghost pipefish, the females form a brood pouch with their pelvic fins and carry the eggs around with them until the young fish hatch.
