English Church (Bad Wildbad)

The English Church

The English Church is located in the spa gardens of Bad Wildbad in the immediate vicinity of the new drinking hall . Its original name was Holy Trinity Church ( Trinity Church ).

history

Due to the high number of English visitors and spa guests, there had been services in Wildbad even before the church was built from 1861 onwards. The Protestant church in Wildbad was used for this purpose. From 1864 the Reverend Ludlow tried to build his own church. Württemberg contributed the land for this purpose, the king signed a subscription list, the city council of Wildbad donated 1,000 florins like the king  and many English guests who regularly came to Wildbad supported the project, as did GJR Gordon, the representative Great Britain in Stuttgart . According to an article in the Illustrated London News from 1869, the plans for the church came from an architect named Withers from Doughty Street in London, who was only "assisted on the spot by Mr. Beyer, of Stuttgardt"; on the building itself, however, there is a plaque in which the planning is entirely attributed to the Stuttgart architect August von Beyer , who tried to give the building the shape of a medieval village church. The church was built from local red sandstone .

Probably around the time it was built, some Wellingtonias were also planted near the church. In addition, two sequoias grow around the church, as well as Nutka false cypresses , a yew and a tulip tree .

Anglican services were held regularly in the Church of England until 1914.

The building has been in state ownership since 1945. Evening devotions are held every Thursday. Concerts are also held in the church. In 2010 the English Church could be visited on the Open Monument Day .
