The Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is a 97-hectare Provincial Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in the Regional District of Nanaimo .
The park is a category II protected area ( national park ).
history
The park was established on December 20, 1940 to protect the natural forest surrounding the falls . According to a First Nation legend , the river got its name after the skeleton of a white man was found near the waterfall.
Flora and fauna
Within the British Columbia ecosystem, the park area is assigned to the Very Dry Maritime Subzone of the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone . These biogeoclimatic zones are characterized by the same or a very similar climate and the same or similar biological and geological conditions. This results in a very similar population of plants and animals in the respective zones.
The waterfalls are located in the middle of a lush forest, some of which still consists of primeval forest of old and unspoilt Douglas firs . In addition to the Douglas fir, there is also the West American hemlock and the Nootka false cypress, as well as endangered species of beard and ragwort . The Englishman River is a spawning area for various species of salmon. Furthermore, the park administration indicates that of the waters of the park green sturgeon occur
tourism
The main attraction of the park are two waterfalls that make the Englishman River plunge into a deep canyon . The park has a picnic area with hiking trails and a campsite. Access to the area is via Highway 4A .
Several hiking trails lead through the forest and along the river. Two bridges span the canyon and provide a good view of the waterfalls. The lower waterfall flows into a natural pool, which can be bathed in in summer. The campsite has 103 pitches.
