Englynion United

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Englynion Gereint [ eŋ'lənjon 'reint ] ("The stanzas Gereints") is the title of a group of 27 stanzas on the Welsh hero Gereint , possibly also the title hero of the saga Gereint fab Erbin ("Gereint, heir's son"). They were probably made between the 9th and 11th centuries and passed down in the Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin ("The Black Book of Carmarthen") and in the Llyfr Coch Hergest ("The Red Book of Hergest").

content

The poem is the central part of a legend about Gereint, the plot of which (presumably in prose) was assumed to be known to the Welsh reader or listener of the time. It is a detailed description of a battle in which Gereint is said to have fought with King Arthur . According to Bernhard Maier , this is an example of the widespread tendency in Welsh tradition to classify almost all legendary figures in the Arthurian legend .

From united, the enemy of oppression,
I saw white horses, their fetters blood-red
and after the battle cry - grim death.

englyn

Englyn [ 'eŋlin ] is the oldest known stanza form in literature in the Cymrian language , which dates back to the 8th / 9th centuries. It was formed in the 16th century and is still used today. The englyn consists of three to four verses , which are connected according to fixed rules both by end rhymes and by alliteration . Very often the whole poem consists of a single stanza of this kind.
