Enrique Banchs

Enrique Banchs (born February 8, 1888 in Buenos Aires , † June 6, 1968 there ) was an Argentine poet.

Banchs worked as a journalist for newspapers and magazines such as "La Prensa", "Átlantida" and for some time he was the editor in charge of "El monitor de la educación común". During Juan Perón's presidency , Banchs was arrested and spent some time in custody ( Peronism ).

The Academia Argentina de Letras accepted him as a member in 1941. Many hoped that Banchs' inaugural address would explain his literary silence. Banchs refused to give any information about this throughout his life.

reception

Up to the age of 23 (1911) Banchs published his four volumes of poetry, with which he immediately confronted Leopoldo Lugones . Some literary critics see him today (2010) as one of the greatest poets in Argentina. After the publication of his work “La urna” he more or less ended his literary work. Apart from his journalistic work, Banchs published only a few short stories in literary magazines throughout his life.

Banchs preferred the sonnet form in his literary work . In his style he remained stuck in classicism and he was inspired by the golden age of Spain .
