Enzo Tonti (born October 30, 1935 in Milan ) is an Italian physicist and mathematician , known for his contributions to structural mechanics and mathematical physics .

Life

Tonti obtained his degree in mathematics and physics at the Polytechnic in Milan in 1961. There he began his work in 1962 as a research assistant in the field of mathematical physics. The call to a professorship at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Trieste also led to a shift in his research interests, which he then increasingly focused on technical mechanics.

The best-known result of Enzo Tonti's research is the clear representation of the relationships between the individual variables of tension , elongation and displacement, including the forces acting on elasticity problems, in a so-called Tonti diagram , which is named after him.

In addition, he made progress in the theory of the formulation of variations of partial differential equations , which is the basis for several modern discretization methods of problems from engineering and physics.
