Epiphany Church

The Epiphany Church is a Protestant church in the Mannheim district of Feudenheim . It was built between 1963 and 1965 according to plans by Albrecht Lange and Hans Mitzlaff .

history

Before and after the turn of the century around 1900, the evangelical congregation of the Johanneskirche in Feudenheim grew rapidly. In 1887 it had 2304 members, in 1910 it was 4476 and in 1939 it was 6647. In 1935, a piece of land was bought for the construction of a second church and in 1939 an architectural competition was held. However, the outbreak of World War II prevented all further plans. In 1954 the Johannesgemeinde was divided into a western and an eastern parish.

After the western parish had its own parish hall as early as 1957, the foundation stone for the church was finally laid on November 3, 1963, the plans for which the Mannheim architects Albrecht Lange and Hans Mitzlaff were responsible. The bell tower was rung the following year and the inauguration of the church was celebrated on March 7, 1965. It was named after Epiphany, the Solemnity of the Epiphany . In 2007 the two Feudenheim congregations reunited due to the reduced number of members.

On the basis of an expert opinion from 2014, which shows a renovation effort in the amount of well over 2 million euros, the existence of the church is in question. However, there were protests from the Feudenheim population against a possible demolition. Two associations were founded with the aim of preserving the church as a cultural church of Epiphany. The church is actively used and services continue to take place.
