Epiphanius ( Ukrainian Епіфаній Epiphanij , secular name Сергій Петрович Думенко Serhiy Petrowytsch Dumenko ; * 3. February 1979 in Wowkowe , Ivanivka Raion , Odessa Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine .

Life

Epiphanius was born in Odessa Oblast and grew up in the village of Stara Schadowa in Chernivtsi Oblast . He began studying at the Kiev Spiritual Seminary in 1996, which he finished in 1999. He then studied at the Kiev Spiritual Academy, which he graduated with a doctorate in 2003. In 2006–2007 he studied philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . In 2007 he took the religious vows and in 2008 he was ordained a priest . Since 2008 Epiphanius was vicar of the Wydubytschi Monastery in Kiev and secretary to the Patriarch Filaret .

On October 21, 2009 he was ordained bishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate . In 2010 he became rector of the Kiev Theological Academy. Epiphany has been Metropolitan of Perejaslav and Bila Tserkva since June 28, 2013 .

Epiphanius is a holder of the Order of Merit of Ukraine 2nd Class.

On December 15, 2018, Epiphanius was elected head of the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine at the synod in the Kiev Cathedral of St. Sophia .
