Stara Schadowa ( Ukrainian Стара Жадова ; Russian Старая Жадова Staraja Schadowa , Romanian Jadova, German until 1918 Żadowa ) is a village in the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi with about 2,400 inhabitants (2001).

In the village there is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, a wooden church built in 1806, and a mansion in a park, which was built in 1893.

The village, first mentioned in writing on March 15, 1490, is the administrative center of the district council of the same name in the northwest of Storozhynets district , which also includes the villages of Dibriwka ( Дібрівка ), Kossowanka ( Косованка ) and Nowa Schadowa ( Нова Жадова ).

Stara Schadowa is located at an altitude of 397  m on the banks of the Sereth , a 726 km long left tributary of the lower Danube , 18 km northwest of the district center Storoschynez and 40 km west of the oblast center Chernivtsi .

The regional road P-62 runs through the village . It has a train station on the Hlyboka – Berehomet railway line .

Personalities

In the village the chief steward , lieutenant field marshal and general Anatol Graf von Bigot de Saint-Quentin (1849-1932) and the Israeli writer Aharon Appelfeld (1932-2018) were born. The Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epiphanius (* 1979) grew up in Stara Schadowa.
