Alexandre Bontemps

Alexandre Bontemps (born June 9, 1626 in Paris , † January 17, 1701 at Versailles Palace ) was an important courtier , member of the Conseil du Roi and first valet of King Louis XIV.

biography

Alexandre Bontemps was born in Paris on June 9, 1626. His father was Jean-Baptiste Bontemps , first surgeon and from 1643 first valet of King Louis XIII. , his mother the merchant's daughter Marguerite Le Roux. His baptism took place on July 17, 1628, the godparents were César de Bourbon and his daughter Élisabeth.

On June 30, 1642, Alexandre Bontemps was appointed Commander Abbot of the Notre-Dame d'Hyverneaux monastery in Lésigny , and on April 14, 1652 he took over the post of first valet to succeed his late father. From 1665 he also served as director of the palace, park and city of Versailles, from 1674 as secretaire général of the Swiss Guard and from 1679 as director of Marly . Finally, he served as governor of Rennes between 1693 and 1698 .

On March 6, 1667 he married Claude-Marguerite Bosc, from this marriage the children Marie Marguerite (* 1668 ), Louis Alexandre (* March 1669 ), Anne Claude (* 1672 ) and Claude Nicolas Alexandre (* 1674 ) were born. His wife died shortly after giving birth to their fourth child.

He suffered a stroke on January 13, 1701 and died four days later with great sympathy from the court. His son Louis Alexandre succeeded him in the post of first valet.
