Colorful aspens caterpillar

The colorful aspen leaf spring wrench ( Epirranthis diversata ) is the only species from the subfamily Desmobathrinae in Central Europe. The Desmobathrinae are a small subfamily of the Spanner (Geometridae).

Way of life

The moths fly day and night from early March to early May. They have been observed suckling on pussy willows. The egg is whitish to slightly reddish. It has a field zone around the opening at the tip ( micropyle ). Shortly before the egg caterpillar hatches, it turns more intense red. The caterpillar is gray-brown with a dark, light-colored topline. The young caterpillars live between woven leaves. Older caterpillars should hide on the ground. The hibernating pupa is small, slender, and light brown.

Forage plant of the caterpillars

The caterpillars of the species seem to specialize in low, young aspens ( Populus tremula ). However, leaves of pyramidal poplar and black poplar were also accepted in captivity .

Occurrence

The species occurs in sparse deciduous forests, avenues, parks, gardens and alluvial forests, where there are forage plants of the caterpillars. It is relatively rare and strictly protected in Germany. The species is classified in category 1 (critically endangered) in Germany's Red List .

Systematics

In Central Europe there is only one species and genus that belongs to the subfamily Desmobathrinae. Many authors still list the genus in the subfamily Oenochrominae, to which some authors also include the genus Alsophila with its two species. Today this genus is mostly viewed as a separate subfamily.
