Epistrategist

Epistratege (gr. Ἐπιστράτηγος, epistrátegos ) was an office introduced under Ptolemy V. The epistrategist combined military, civil and legal competences in his hand. Several strategists and thus several districts were subordinate to him. Epistrategists are particularly frequent for the Thebais . In Roman times, the previously major episodes were divided into three to four smaller ones. A Roman epistrategist administered the Nile Delta , another the Heptanomia and the Third Upper Egypt . The Roman epistrates usually came from the knighthood .
