Epitaph of the Briegel family

The epitaph of the Briegel family is to the left of the entrance to the Gallus Church in Pappenheim in the Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia ( Bavaria ). The epitaph made of Jura marble from the region shows the genealogy of the Briegel family over three generations.

description

In the upper part the resurrection of Christ is depicted against the backdrop of the heavenly Jerusalem . Christ rises from the grave with the Easter flag in his left hand, while the guard soldiers are thrown to the ground. Facing this scene, Hans Briegel can be seen on the left with his seven sons, five sons being marked as already deceased with a cross over their heads. To the right of the central resurrection scene, Elisabeth Briegel can be seen with her ten daughters, six of whom are marked as already deceased. Below is the inscription:

"A (nn) o. 1604 the 25th of october Has fallen asleep in God Selligklich Der Erbar and knows H: (err) Hanß brigel Burger and the Rahts all here were 67 years old and A (nn) o. 1607 the 5th of November: according to his dear Husf in Cristlich: (rough) Elisabet a born wisdom whose companion God wants to be merciful and merciful Amen "

Below this inscription is the family coat of arms of the Briegel. To the left, Caspar Briegel kneels and prays with his nine sons, seven of whom have already died. To the right of this are his two daughters, one of whom was deceased, and his two wives. These are shown with a hood . The inscription reads:

"A (nn) o. 16 [] Is in God asleep the mercy and knows H: (err) Caspar Brigelburger and the Rahts allhie AN (n) O. 1597 the 25th of october His first house fell asleep in Gott sellig: (rough) kiniguntina A born bird Gebirdig vo (n) Eystet your age 26 and A (nn) o. 16 [] his other housewife died: (au) Ursula Geborn [e) [ picture part ] from (n) weissenburg whose [ picture part ] and all Christ believers [ picture part ] God gracious wölle [ picture part ] Amen "

The client of the epitaph, Caspar Briegel, and his wife were alive when it was made. Her death dates should have been added in the gaps, but this did not happen. Caspar Briegel died in April and his wife in May 1626.

In the third and lower part there is no center to which the kneeling could turn. The inscription, which applies to Christof Briegel, who died at the age of 22, is arranged closely and makes full use of the available space on the stone. Christof Briegel, Caspar Briegel's son, was married and had three children, of which the two girls were still alive. The inscription reads:

"A (nn) o. 1604 the [ picture part ] February 25th, the merciful and respectable Christoff Brigel Burger and Handelsman alhie his age 22 years the sellen God be gracious wölle amen A (nno) 16 [] the [] died his dear household: (rough ) Barbarian brigelin otherwise bestla bestla mairin von wetelsheim the sellen God Gnedig sein wölle Amen "
