Epithemia is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with about 26 species in fresh and brackish water.
features
The representatives are single-celled diatoms sitting on the substrate. The cells have a two-counter shell, which is typical for diatoms. The shell is rectangular when viewed from the side and curved when viewed from the shell, with one side being convex and the other more or less strongly concave. The shells have a raphe that is shifted towards the concave edge rather than in the middle. The bowls are covered with transverse grooves. The single plastid is wall-mounted on the concave side. The length varies from 20 to 160 µm, depending on the species.
Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical dichotomy of diatoms. Sexual reproduction occurs through isogamy , with two gametes being formed per cell . The cells then enlarge during the auxospore formation.
Occurrence
Epithemia lives on solid substrate, on aquatic plants and thread algae. They occur in standing and flowing water, including brackish water.
