Epuraea unicolor is a beetle from the family of the gloss beetles (Nitidulidae). Some authors consider the very similar species Epuraea biguttata to be a form of E. unicolor . Epuraea unicolor isassigned tothe subgenus Epuraea .

features

The beetles grow to be 2.5–3.0 mm long. They have a red-yellow to red-brown basic color. The pronotum edge is widest in the rear quarter and not quite evenly rounded. The elytra and pronotum show larger shadow-like darkenings.

distribution

The species is common in the Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. In southern Central Europe it is the second most common species of the genus Epuraea after Epuraea aestiva . Their occurrence extends to North Africa, the Middle East and the Far East of Russia .

Way of life

The larvae feed in particular on the tinder fungus ( Fomes fomentarius ). Fermented plant juices from Norway maple , silver birch and English oak are also mentioned as food sources . The beetles can be observed particularly in March and April in compost heaps, at several leaves mushrooms and scale sponges ( Fomes ), in rotten wood and sludge as well as in the leaf litter.
