He wakes me up every morning is a poem created by Jochen Klepper (1903–1942) that found its way into numerous hymn books in Rudolf Zöbeley's setting from 1941.

content

The poem, composed on April 12, 1938, appeared in the volume Kyrie in 1938 . Holy songs. under the title morning song . Klepper sent him the Bible verse programmatically:

“He wakes me up every morning; he wakes my ear so that I can hear like a disciple. The Lord has opened my ear; And I am not disobedient and I am not going back. Because I know that I will not be put to shame. He is near who speaks me righteously. ( Isa 50,4-8  LUT ) "

Klepper's diary entry of April 12, 1938 is also preceded by this passage from the Bible, and he continues:

“Soft, shiny day. My little Easter errands for mother, wife and daughters. The old cherry trees bloom so beautifully in our old garden on Seestrasse. […] Today I wrote a morning song about Isaiah 50, 4.5.6.7.8, the words that I couldn't get out of my ears all day. "

text

1. He wakes me up every morning;
he wakes my ear himself.
God does not keep himself hidden,
leads me up the day
that I
greet the new light with his word .
Already at the dusk gate
he is close to me and speaks.

2. He speaks as he did on the day
he created the world.
Fear and complaint are silent;
nothing counts more than its reputation! I experience the
word of eternal fidelity that
God swears to us human beings
anew,
just as a disciple hears.

3. He wants me to submit.
I am not going back.
I only have enough in him,
in his word my happiness.
I will not be ashamed
if I only hear him:
God will free me from my bonds!
God makes me nice to him!

4. He is close to me every day
and speaks up about myself. Otherwise no master gives the servant
what I receive from him
.
How good it is for the slave here -
the master is ready to
escort him from sleep
to his service!

5. Early on he wants to envelop me
with his word and light, promise
and fulfill,
so that I lack nothing;
want to pay me full wages
, don't ask if I'm failing.
His word wants to shine brightly,
how dark the day!

The song can be found u. a. in the Protestant hymn book (EG 452) and in the hymn book Fieren & Loben (FL 454), as well as in the Reformed hymnal of German-speaking Switzerland (RG 574).
