Jürgen Henkys

Jürgen Henkys (born November 6, 1929 in Heiligenkreutz , East Prussia ; † October 22, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German pastor and Protestant theologian as well as hymn poet and translator.

Life

Henkys comes from an East Prussian pastor family. He had four siblings; one brother was the publicist Reinhard Henkys . He was baptized in the Church of Heiligenkreutz (East Prussia) . He spent his school days in Heiligenkreutz in Palmnicken on the Samland amber coast , in Königsberg (Prussia) , in Wyk on Föhr and in Leverkusen . Here he passed his Abitur in 1948 and then studied theology in Wuppertal , Göttingen , Heidelberg and Bonn .

Henkys then took up his service in the GDR at the request of the East German churches . At the beginning of 1954, he followed a call by the EKD to take up parish service in an East German regional church and moved to the GDR. After the school vicariate he became a preacher ( vicar ) in Groß Mehßow in Niederlausitz . In 1956 he was ordained and assistant preacher , then study inspector at the Predigerseminar Brandenburg an der Havel , and finally a lecturer in catechetics there . In 1965 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Bible study. Dealing with the Holy Scriptures in the Protestant youth organizations after the First World War at the University of Greifswald . The work was published in Hamburg in 1966 .

From 1965 on, Henkys was a lecturer at the Sprachenkonvikt of the former East Berlin Church University. His habilitation in the church, which he obtained in 1988, was confirmed at a university in 1990. From 1991 Henkys was professor for practical theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin; In 1995 he retired.

Henkys published transcriptions of songs from other languages. His songs were included in the Protestant hymn book , among other things . In addition to songs in the main part of the hymn book, he wrote a number of texts on psalm settings, especially in the regional part of the Reformed churches.

He was married to the theologian Erika, b. Gooßes (March 15, 1928 - October 10, 2015). The couple, who died 12 days apart, had three sons and one daughter. From 1965 to 1999 the family lived in the parsonage in Petershagen / Eggersdorf . Since 2017, a plaque has been attached to the building, which is now used as a parish hall.
