Dirk Raphaelzoon Camphuysen (* 1586 in Gorinchem ; † July 18, 1627 in Dokkum ) was a Dutch poet , language teacher , preacher and printer .

Life

Camphuysen began studying theology at the University of Leiden in 1608 , but dropped out in 1611 without a degree. He then worked as a private tutor and private secretary at Loevestein Castle , where he also continued his theological studies. In 1614 he became a teacher at the Latin School in Utrecht . Already employed as assistant preacher in Utrecht in 1616 , after passing his exams in 1617 he was appointed preacher in Vleuten . Because he was one of the remonstrants , he was deposed after the Synod of Dordrecht in 1619 and banned from the Netherlands the following year because he continued to preach illegally. Camphuyzen moved to the city of Norden in East Frisia, where the Lutheran Count Enno III. also tolerated the remonstrants. There he ran together with Pieter Arentsz. a printing house that printed about 14 books; in addition to Camphuysen's own works a. a. also works by Sebastian Franck and other books in support of the Remonstrant cause.

At the end of 1622 Camphuysen went back to the Netherlands. In Harlingen , West Frisia , he wrote his most successful work, Stichtelycke Rymen , a collection of sacred songs. He later lived on Ameland and most recently in Dokkum, where shortly before death he completed a copy of the Psalms . It was published posthumously in 1610 and has seen many new editions.

The melody that was later used for the Easter song Hoe groot de vruchten zijn can be found for the first time in the Stichtelycke Rymen , which had at least 34 further editions by the end of the 17th century . In the German translation, the song is printed as The beautiful Easter day in the Evangelical Hymn book as No. 117.
