Location of Vleuten in the municipality of Utrecht |
Vleuten is a district of the Dutch municipality of Utrecht in the province of Utrecht . Until 2001, Vleuten was the main town in the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern . Vleuten is fully integrated as a district of the city of Utrecht, but has retained features (place-name sign, etc.) of its former independence. Vleuten has 6,905 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
In 1881 Vleuten was connected to the Utrecht – Rotterdam railway line with the construction of a train station . The central station in Utrecht could be reached by train in around seven minutes. In November 2007, the Vleuten train station was set back 300 meters to the west and is now located on the new elevated double-track railway line, which has been expanded to four tracks since 2010.
The former town hall of the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern is located in Vleuten and is now the seat of the police station. The Hamturm, a tower from the 13th century and part of the old Den Ham castle, is located southwest of the old village on the old path to Harmelen .
Vleuten has a reformed church with a tower from 1300.
In Roman times , Vleuten was a castellum and vicus called Fletio or Fletione . Vleuten is mentioned for the first time in 1164 as Flutene . The village developed around the church and remained small for centuries. From 1900 onwards the development along the main street was built and in 1885 the Roman Catholic Willbrordkirche was built.
After 1950, Vleuten developed quickly.
