Harmelen is a district of the municipality Woerden in the Dutch province of Utrecht . The village is cut through by the Leidse Rijn , which turns into the Oude Rijn . Harmelen has 8,175 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and an area of 23.76 km² .
geography
Harmelen is about 15 km west of Utrecht and 6 km east of Woerden, the settlement area is north of the A 12 motorway and on the N 198 . Harmelen was an independent municipality until 2001, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Woerden. In the area around Harmelen, livestock farming makes up the most important part of agriculture, with fruit and horticulture in particular. There are only a few industrial companies in the technology sector; the transport and service industries are present. The latter operate on a local and regional level.
history
Huis Harmelen is a former fort and a Ridderhofstad from 1295, which was destroyed and rebuilt in the 20th century.
Originally the village was built around the medieval church in the center of the village, but it has since been expanded to include new housing developments.
One of the most dramatic days in Harmelen's history is January 8, 1962, on which two trains collided in the Harmelen railway accident and 93 passengers were killed. The scene of the accident is, however, on the territory of the then neighboring municipality of Kamerik .
Sports
The local football club is SCH '44. There is also a basketball club as well as tennis courts, a swimming pool, a riding school and a boy scout department.

Waterstaat
Harmelen fell from the Middle Ages to the 20th century rata into two water boards : the polder Gerverscop, Breudijk, Oudeland and Haanwijk belonged to Groot-van Woerden water board while Harmelen ( Polder Bijleveld ) Harmelerwaard and Reijerscop part of the water board Bijleveld were. The Haanwijkersluis in the Oude Rijn formed the border between the two hydraulic engineering areas.
