Era Aviation was an American airline based in Anchorage , Alaska . It operated regional flights, including feeder flights for Alaska Airlines .
history
The airline was founded in 1948 by Carl F. Brady with a Bell 47A helicopter as the agricultural aviation company Economy Pest Control and began flight operations in the same year. In 1948 he successfully applied for survey flights for the US Geological Survey in Alaska.
The company, including the helicopter, was relocated from Yakima, Washington State to Anchorage, Alaska and renamed Economy Helicopters . In 1950 additional orders were accepted for an oil company. He needed several larger helicopters for the jobs. To finance it, he teamed up with the Californian company Rotor Aids and created the company Economy Rotor Aids , or ERA Helicopters . Two Sikorski S-55s and another Bell 47 were procured.
In 1967 Brady sold his company to the Texas oil company Rowan Drilling, based in Houston, Texas. He himself remained vice president of the company. In 1968 the era of transport aircraft began with a Swearingen Merlin IIA, as well as a Beech King 90, Twin Otter and Hawker Siddeley HS 125. Rowan Drilling divided the company into three divisions: ERA Helicopters Alaska Division, ERA Helicopters Gulf Coast Division and ERA Jet Alaska.
With nine DHC-6 Twin Otter and Beech Air 100 as well as three Convair CV-580 and one DHC-7, flight operations began in May 1983 to the niche regions in Alaska and its hinterland of the Coastal Eskimos. In 1987 the company was renamed ERA Aviation, the red paint remained. Several mergers and sales followed.
In 2004 SEACOR Holdings bought the entire company. Finances have been transferred to CapitalSource . They only wanted to keep the fillet of ERA Helicopters and turned the money off to ERA Aviation. In 2005, ERA Aviation applied for bankruptcy protection .
The renovation lasted until 2007. The route network and the fleet were greatly reduced. ERA Aviation started the new beginning.
On January 1, 2010, Era Aviation merged with Frontier Alaska , Frontier Flying Service and Hageland Aviation Services to form Era Alaska .
