The Erbenheimer Warte

The Erbenheimer Warte is a watch tower built in 1497 in Mainz-Kastel and belongs to the former Kasteler Landwehr . It stands on the high plateau in the area of today's Fort Biehler settlement on the border with Erbenheim , which, like Mainz-Kastel, is now a district of the Hessian capital Wiesbaden .

It is a round tower with a pointed stone roof and machicolation , the entrance to which is high above the ground. Today the tower is looked after by an association and can be visited after registration.

Towards the end of the 15th century, the Archbishop of Mainz had Berthold von Henneberg built as protection against strong “robbery”, in particular the “ Eppstein robber barons ”, the Kasteler Landwehr, with various waiting towers. The Mosbacher Warte , the Erbenheimer Warte, the Hochheimer Warte and the Flörsheimer Warte near Wicker belonged to this facility, which is sometimes called the “Mainzer Landwehr” .
