The pea fountain in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt

The Erbsenbrunnen is a fountain on Marktstrasse in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt . It was created in 1929 by the sculptor Fritz von Graevenitz (1892–1959).

history

The pea fountain was built in 1929 on Marktstrasse in Stuttgart's Bad Cannstatt district. An older iron well had previously been located at this point. The fountain bears his name because its water has a low water hardness and is said to be particularly suitable for cooking legumes such as beans and peas . The model for the fountain figure of the little boy was Fritz von Graevenitz's nephew, who later became Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker , as Weizsäcker remembers in 1990 when he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Stuttgart. Weizsäcker was wrong here, since, according to contemporary witnesses, he was the model for the Faunbrunnen (also by Fritz von Graevenitz).

After the Second World War , the previously intact fountain figure was destroyed in a case of vandalism by a French occupation soldier. That is why the figure of the boy was recreated by Fritz von Graevenitz in 1948. In the years 2000 and 2018 the pea well was completely renovated. The mineral water that gushes out of it is drinkable.

Appearance

The pea fountain is made of yellow Cannstatter travertine . It shows a naked, little boy who is standing in a very upright position with his back arched and lifting a jug of water with his left arm. The boy is standing on a ball depicting an oversized pea and bearing the number 1929. Water flows from the sphere through four short pipes into a hexagonal fountain basin below. The jug and the pea allude to the fact that water used to be brought here to boil. The number 1929 refers to the year the fountain was originally built.
