Erchless Castle is a tower house with an L-shaped floor plan at the village Struy in the Scottish administration unit Highland . The current castle, which was built around 1600, is located at the confluence of the Strath and Farrar to the River Beauly .

history

13th - 19th century

The Bissetts had a building built on this site in the 13th century, which in the 15th century came into the hands of the Chisholm clan through the marriage of Alexander Chisholm to Margaret, Lady of Erchless . It became the seat of the clan. Today's Tower House was built around 1600 and an extension in the Scottish Baronial Style was added in 1895 .

20th century

After the death of the last member of the direct line of the Chisholm family, the trustees of the late Lady Annie Cecilia Chisholm of Chisholm took over the property. In 1932 and 1933 the land manager was a certain William Macintyre , who lived at Sawmill Cottage .

The April 17, 1937 Highland News stated that the Chisholms' estate was sold to an unknown person on April 10, 1937. The lands included Erchless Castle and its forest, the deer in the forests of Affric, Fasnakyle, Cozac and Benula , and the more distant estates of Buntait, Kerrow and Rheindown . The buyer was the Highland Estates Ltd .

In 1946 the Erchless estate was acquired in the name of Baron Siegfried Nikolai von Stackelberg and his wife, Baroness Phyllis von Stackelberg . The fortune to purchase the property came from the baroness's father, George Roscoe , a co-owner of James Roscoe & Sons . The property remained in the hands of George Ruscoe's trustees until 1963–1964, but the valuation roll for the following year names the family of Sir Lawrence Robson , founder of the accounting firm Robson Rhodes , as the new laird of Erchless Castle .

But the Trustees did not sell the entire estate of the former Erchless Castle: The Valuation Roll for Kilmorack for 1964–1965 shows that they still owned Teanassie House and most of Breakachy . Baron and Baroness von Stackelberg retired to Teanassie House. Her headstones read, “In memory of Baron Nicholas Stackelberg of Teanassie House, Phyllis' beloved husband, died September 30, 1966.” Phyllis Mary, Baroness von Stackelberg, died March 21, 1982.

After Sir Lawrence Robson's death in 1982, his son, Erik Maurice William Robson inherited the castle.
