The Concepción earthquake on February 8, 1570 destroyed the city of Concepción in Chile . The earthquake occurred around 9 a.m. local time and had a magnitude of 8.3.

The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that destroyed all the houses in the city. According to NOAA , the earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed more than 2,000 residents. Some of the residents were able to get to higher altitudes in good time. Concepción was later rebuilt about 15 km inland. In the place of the "old" Concepción is now the coastal town of Penco , which is nicknamed "cuna de Concepción" (cradle of Concepción) and forms a commune with the port city of Lirquén .

Aftershocks were still felt five months later.
