A landslide in El Salvador that was triggered by the earthquake

The earthquake in El Salvador on January 13, 2001 was an earthquake whose epicenter was on the coast of El Salvador , about 100 km southwest of San Miguel . It had a magnitude of 7.7 M wc on the moment magnitude scale . The quake, which acted at a depth of 60 km, originated on the border between the Caribbean and Cocos plates and was felt from Mexico City to Colombia , in almost all of Central America . Significant aftershocks occurred on January 14th and 16th.

944 people were killed in El Salvador - 585 of them in two major landslides in Nueva San Salvador and Comasagua - and 5565 injured. 108,226 homes were destroyed; more than 150,000 buildings suffered damage. In addition, more than 16,000 landslides occurred. Eight people died in the quake in Guatemala .
