Built in 2005, it was previously the official seat of the Alsace region as Maison de la Région Alsace .

location

The building is located in the north-east of the city, not far from the exhibition grounds and the Europaviertel. It is located north of the Aar on Place Adrien Zeller, which was inaugurated in 2010, in the Wacken district. In front of the building there is a bus stop and tram lines B and E.

description

The Maison de la Région was planned by the Paris architecture firm Chaix & Morel et associeés and completed in 2005. The architects Beaudouin, Beaudouin & Richter took part in the competition in 1999.

The building was built on a square plan. It has five levels with a usable area of 19,000 m² and 10,000 m² of glazed facades. On the ground floor there are mainly common rooms, such as the plenary hall, a projection room, the documentation center and an exhibition area, grouped around the north-south axis. The offices of the President, the General Management, the Cabinet and the Committees are located on the first floor. The regional administration offices occupy the second and third floors. The self-service catering, cafeteria and dining room occupy the top level of the building.

Larger blocks have been cut out of this cuboid in the north and the upper floors to allow more daylight for the offices. This is described as “une volumétrie complexe dans une enveloppe simple” (a complex volumetry in a simple envelope) . A steel structure with a roof made of lamellas encompasses the entire structure.

The building was designed according to modern environmental standards and as an energy-efficient building. Solar collectors are supposed to cover two thirds of the hot water requirement of the canteen. The respective sun protection is different depending on the direction of the compass and should minimize solar radiation depending on the season. When choosing the materials, the use of wood played a major role. Douglas fir from the Vosges was used for the facades, beech from the Doubs department for wall cladding, false ceilings and furniture, and Slovak oak for the flooring of the main axis and corridors.
