The parakeets ( Pezoporus ) are a genus of Australian parrots. It consists of the night parakeet ( Pezoporus occidentalis ) and the ground parakeet ( Pezoporus wallicus ).

features

Parakeets are medium-sized parrots with an average length of 25-30 centimeters. The main feature of the parakeets is their green body, which is covered with black transverse waves. These are created by the wide black fringing of the feathers. In addition, the plumage of the ventral side, parts of the wings and parts of the tail feathers are yellowish. Furthermore, common features are the dark gray beak, the gray nasal skin, the light brown legs and the thick head. Only the Parakeet and the Western Parakeet have a red forehead.

distribution

Distribution areas of the parakeet subspecies and the night parakeet

The genus inhabits the Australian continent mainly on the southern coasts, as well as western Tasmania .

Systematics

The genus is considered to be part of the Platycercini tribe , or alternatively as a subfamily Pezoporinae within the monotypical Pezoporini tribe. The closest relatives are the grass parakeets ( Neophema ) and probably the budgie ( Melopsittacus undulatus ). More recent research gives rise to the assumption that this genus does not belong to its own tribe, but to the Platycercini tribe.
