Erev schel Shoshanim

Erev schel Shoshanim ( Hebrew ערב של שושנים"Evening of lilies", often translated as "evening of roses", since the Hebrew word Shoshana in Israel can be interpreted as both "rose" and "lily") is a Hebrew love song , whose melody by Josef Hadar and the text was written by Moshe Dor .

The melody is often played at weddings and has been repositioned by Gesto Bergen into the Catholic hymn Do you know the old song . In Finland the song became known by Juhani Forsberg under the name Tiellä ken vaeltaa . In the Orient, the melody is often used for belly dancing . The first recording of the song was sung by Yafa Yarkoni in 1957. The song was made famous by the HaDuda'im duo , who made this song a hit in Israel and beyond. In the following years the song was performed by many singers, including Harry Belafonte , Nana Mouskouri , Daliah Lavi , Hanna Aroni and Miriam Makeba . Tzvi Hillman created the first Israeli folk dance based on this song in 1966 .
