Rheinauen recreation center
The Rheinauen recreation center (just called Rheinauen for short ) is a public bathing and leisure facility on the Old Rhine in the municipality of the Austrian city of Hohenems in the state of Vorarlberg . With an area of more than 120,000 m² , the recreation center is, according to its own information, the largest outdoor swimming pool in western Austria. Depending on the weather, the recreation center has between 110,000 and 250,000 visitors annually. The record number of daily visitors is currently around 7,000 guests.
location
The facility is located directly on the Old Rhine, which at this point represents the state border between Austria and Switzerland. It is located in the extreme western part of the Hohenems municipality and is located on the site between the Old Rhine and the Rheintal / Walgau motorway that runs almost parallel to it . To the west, the area of the Rheinauen recreation center borders directly on the municipality of Altach in the Feldkirch district , although some small parts of the facility, namely a few sports fields, are already located in the Altach municipality.
Furnishing
The largest body of water in the facility is a 400-meter-long arm of the Old Rhine, a stagnant body of water that remained from the original course of the Rhine after the Alpine Rhine was regulated at the beginning of the 20th century . At this point, the Old Rhine separates the national territories of the Republic of Austria and the Swiss Confederation, so that the arm of the Old Rhine, which is part of the Rheinauen recreation center, is still on the Austrian side, while the other, continuous arm of the Old Rhine is part of Swiss territory . Due to its depth, the open water is only permitted for experienced swimmers. Directly on the Old Rhine there is a diving platform and, since 2013, an adventure slide with a length of 83 meters, one of the longest water slides in Vorarlberg.
In addition to the natural Old Rhine, the Rheinauen recreation center has a 50-meter-long sports pool, a 1,150 m² family pool and the 152 m² relaxation pool as a relaxation pool. There is also a separate area for toddlers with two small slides, a mini waterfall, a play stream and a large sandpit with its own mud area.
In the Rheinauen recreation center, there are beach volleyball courts and large open spaces for other sporting activities.
