Eric Lynn Johnson (born October 10, 1975 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Democratic Party and the 62nd Mayor of Dallas as of June 17, 2019. He previously represented the cities of Dallas and Mesquite in the Texas House of Representatives .

Life

Eric Johnson grew up in Oak Cliff , a neighborhood in Dallas. After attending two elementary schools in Dallas, he received a scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for the Greenhill School in Addison , Texas. After graduating from school in 1994, Johnson studied at Harvard University , where he was involved in the Harvard Black Students Association. Johnson studied Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley in the summer of 1996 , and graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1998 . Johnson returned to Dallas that year, initially as an investment banker and later as an advisor to Representative Yvonne Davis . Between 1999 and 2003, Johnson studied law at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a Juris Doctor degree .

On April 20, 2010, Eric Johnson was sworn in as a member of the Texas House of Representatives . In November 2010, he was re-elected in a regular election without opposing candidates, as well as in November 2012. In total, Johnson was a member of the legislature of the state of Texas for five terms . On May 2, 2018, he announced his candidacy for election as Speaker of the House of Representatives. On November 12, 2018, he withdrew his candidacy and announced that he would support Republican Dennis Bonnen in the election as House Speaker. In December 2018, Johnson finally announced that he would run in the Dallas mayoral election the following year.

In the first round of voting on May 4, 2019, Johnson received the most votes with 20.31 percent, ahead of City Councilor Scott Briggs, who received 18.48 percent of the vote. In the runoff election on June 8, 2019, Johnson prevailed against Briggs with 55.61 percent of the vote. Eric Johnson was sworn into office on June 17, 2019, replacing Mike Rawlings , who had resigned after two terms. At the same time he resigned his mandate in the Texas House of Representatives.

Johnson is married and has two sons.
