Eric Joyce (born October 13, 1960 in Perth ) is a Scottish politician who was formerly a member of the Labor Party .

Life

Joyce was born in Perth in 1960. He attended the Perth Academy and then joined the military in the Black Watch from 1978 to 1981 . Joyce then studied at the University of Stirling and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . While working for Black Watch again between 1987 and 1999, he studied at the Universities of Bath and Keele .

For the socialist Fabian Society , Joyce , who has held the rank of major since 1992, wrote the treatise "Arms and the Man: Reviewing the Armed Services", which thematizes racial and class differences in the British military. In this he described the British Army as a racist and sexist organization led by rich white-skinned generals. Subsequently, in a series of hearings, he was advised to quit military service in order to forestall an impending discharge. On March 12, 1999, Joyce resigned from the military. The military accused him of arrogance, disobedience and impracticability.

Political career

After the former Labor politician Dennis Canavan , who had represented the constituency of Falkirk West since its introduction in 1983 in the British House of Commons , indirectly resigned by accepting the office of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on November 21, 2000, were in the constituency By-elections required. In these elections, held on December 21 of the same year, the Labor Party elected Joyce. This was able to prevail relatively narrowly and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In the following regular general election in 2001 , Joyce defended his mandate.

In the course of the constituency revision, Joyce's constituency Falkirk West was dissolved at the end of the electoral term. In the general election in 2005 , he therefore applied for the mandate of the newly created constituency of Falkirk , which he clearly won with 50.9% of the vote. In the 2010 elections Joyce defended his mandate.

During his parliamentary term, Joyce served as Parliamentary Private Secretary under various junior ministers, but resigned from this position in 2009. As a result of various controversies, Joyce became increasingly intolerable to the Labor Party. On March 12, 2012, he then announced his resignation from the party. He announced that he would be an independent member of the House for the remainder of the electoral term and would no longer stand as a candidate in the following elections. At the end of the legislature, Joyce resigned from the British House of Commons.

Controversy

With a demand of £ 174,811, Joyce topped the 2006 spending list of all MPs. After he had promised to operate more moderately, he saved some costs the following year, but topped the list again in 2008.

After Joyce drove a car in 2010, presumably drunk and refused to take an alcohol test, his driver's license was revoked for a year. In 2012, while under the influence of alcohol, Joyce assaulted and injured five Conservatives and one Labor MP in a restaurant in the Palace of Westminster reserved for MPs. When security forces led away the resisting, another door was damaged. He was subsequently sentenced to pay a fine and compensation for pain and suffering.

As a result of this act, Joyce's membership of the Labor Party was suspended. Furthermore, he was banned from visiting any places where alcohol was sold nationwide for a period of three months. Joyce also had to wear an electronic ankle cuff for a period of twelve months . When he cut their ribbons a few months later and took them off, he was again fined. In another bar in the Palace of Westminister, Joyce was again attacked under the influence of alcohol in 2013. This led to the fact that he was permanently banned from drinking alcohol in all Parliament facilities.

Joyce was found guilty of assaulting two teenagers in 2015 and was sentenced to ten months' imprisonment in addition to payment of pain and suffering.
