eric is an integrated development environment (IDE) for software technology . eric was primarily written for the Python programming language , but also supports Ruby and a variety of other programming languages.

eric is made available for download free of charge by the developer on the project's website. In addition, eric is part of the package managers of many GNU / Linux distributions .

eric is written in Python and uses PyQt and the Qt Toolkit . The IDE is (optionally) the front end for various programs, such as the QScintilla editor widget , the Python Language Interpreter , the Rope Refactoring Tool and the Python Profiler . eric provides a project manager, an editor with syntax highlighting , a debugging function, an IRC client and a Python command line . It supports module tests and the development of graphical user interfaces . Numerous plug-ins can still be loaded, for example syntax checks or status displays for version management software ( SVN , CVS ).
