Eric Yuan

Eric S. Yuan (Chinese:袁征; Pinyin: Yuan Zheng * 1970 in Tai'an , Shandong ) is a Chinese - American entrepreneur and the CEO and founder of Zoom Video Communications . Since he owns 22% of the shares in Zoom, his net worth as of June 2020 was $ 10.9 billion.

career

Yuan is the son of a mining scientist and grew up in the Chinese province of Shandong. He earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Shandong University of Science and Technology and a master's degree in mining engineering from China University of Mining and Technology . As a freshman in 1987, he was inspired to develop video calling software because he wanted to communicate with his distant girlfriend. After graduating, he worked in Japan for several years and immigrated to the United States in 1997. At that time, Yuan spoke very little English and had to apply for a visa to the United States nine times.

Upon arriving in the US, Yuan joined WebEx , a video conferencing startup. The company was taken over by Cisco Systems in 2007 ; at this point he became Vice President of Engineering. In 2011, Yuan proposed a new, smartphone-friendly video conferencing system to Cisco management. When the idea was rejected, Yuan left Cisco to start his own company called Zoom Video Communications. When Zoom went public in 2019, Yuan became a billionaire.

Private life

Yuan is married with three children. He and his family lived in Santa Clara ( California ).
