Erich Bechtolf

Erich Bechtolf (born April 8, 1891 in Elberfeld , † October 30, 1969 in Hamburg ) was a German lawyer . From 1942 to 1945 and from 1952 to 1957 he was a member of the board of directors and from 1960 to 1967 chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank .

Life

Erich Bechtolf was married to Margarete Bechtolf, b. Schwammborn, with whom he had a son.

After studying law, he first worked as an in-house counsel at the employers' association in Elberfeld, before moving to Deutsche Bank in 1922. In 1925, Bechtolf first became branch manager in Hamm before moving to the Berlin branch office as a department director in 1928. In the following years he worked as a legal advisor in the merger with Disconto-Gesellschaft and in 1932 went to Hamburg as a branch manager, where he primarily established and maintained business relationships with major shipping companies such as HAPAG . In 1940 he moved to the supervisory board of the Dutch Handel-Maatschappij H. Albert de Bary & Co. -Bank in the occupied Netherlands. In 1942 he became a board member of Deutsche Bank, where he was responsible for the Rhenish and Saxon branch districts. In 1945 Bechtolf went to Hamburg because they wanted to organize a relocation of the bank headquarters to the west for the expected Russian occupation of Berlin. In 1946 he was suspended by the Allies . From the end of 1947, Bechtolf continued his work in the so-called management staff in Hamburg . During the so-called partial banking period , Bechtolf was a member of the board of directors of Norddeutsche Bank in Hamburg. After denazification by the British military, Bechtolf took part in the decentralization of the major banks in the British occupation zone as part of the management of the Hamburg headquarters from 1948. Bechtolf was mainly responsible for the stock exchange and legal department. From 1960 to 1967 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank.

His grandson is the theater actor and director Sven-Eric Bechtolf (* 1957).
