Erich Lutter (born August 19, 1884 ; † after 1973 ) was a German SS leader. Lutter is considered to be one of the inventors of the self-firing systems that were later used on the inner-German border .

Life

Lutter joined the SS (membership number 423.951) and the NSDAP ( membership number 2.640.140) in the 1930s . During the Second World War he was, since October 1, 1942 with the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer , head of Section II D 4 ("Arms") in Department II D ("Technical Affairs") in the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA).

According to research by the West Berlin journalist Georg Bensch , Lutter was the original inventor of the self-firing systems that the German Democratic Republic (GDR) used to secure its border systems at the time of the East-West conflict and the division of Germany in the 1970s and 1980s The inner German border began: According to Bensch, Lutter had developed the concept for a self-firing machine while he was employed in the Reich Main Security Office with the aim of securing the fences around concentration camps in such a way that prisoners could be prevented from escaping with little personnel. Rangmar Staffa names in his biography Egon Bahrs the head of the Reich Security Main Office Reinhard Heydrich as the client of Lutters. After Heydrich's death, however, the idea was forgotten, which explains its non-use or non-completion by the Nazi system. According to Bensch, the not fully developed plans for Lutter's machine fell into the hands of the Soviet Union after the end of the Second World War , which later left them to those responsible for the GDR. They finally developed the Lutter apparatus further in the 1950s into the self-shot apparatus that was then set up along the GDR borders for decades. According to Staffa's book, Lutter owned a patent for his invention, so Staffa believed that the GDR owed him financial fees.
