Erik Quistgaard

Erik Quistgaard (born June 3, 1921 in Copenhagen , † February 11, 2013 in Valbonne , France ) was a Danish engineer and from 1980 to 1984 Director General of the European Space Agency ( ESA).

Life

In 1945 Erik Quistgaard graduated from Denmark's Technical University with a degree in mechanical engineering with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) . Early in his career in 1948–1951, Quistgaard worked in the United States as an engineer for Chrysler and for Volvo in Sweden , where he held various functions in production management from 1956–1972. Before joining ESA from 1972–1979 he was director of the Danish shipyard Odense Staalskibsværft .

As Director General of ESA, he was responsible for the early phases of Ariane rocket development as well as that of Spacelab as one of the first participations in human space science . The maiden flight with the first ESA astronaut in space also took place at this time .

In 1984 Quistgaard received the Distinguished Public Service Medal of NASA as a European .

Quistgaard was also a co-founder of the Luxembourg company and satellite operator of the Astra satellites of SES SA
