Erik De Clercq

Erik Désiré Alice De Clercq (born March 28, 1941 in Dendermonde ) is a Belgian virologist and doctor .

Life

De Clercq teaches at the Catholic University of Leuven . He concentrates his research on the development of active substances for the treatment of virus infections. Since 1976 he has been working closely with the Czech researcher Antonín Holý . Together they developed the antiviral drug tenofovir .

Since the early 1990s, Holý and De Clercq worked with the US pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences . Since 1989 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .
